Burkush confirmed chief of the Manchester Fire Department

Deputy Fire Chief James A. Burkush won confirmation last night as chief of the state's largest fire department.

Burkush, 49, received a standing ovation in the aldermanic chambers after a unanimous vote to approve his nomination. The promotion makes Burkush the tenth chief in the 129-year history of the Manchester Fire Department.

"I truly believe it's an honor to serve the citizens and the firefighters of this city," Burkush said yesterday.

Burkush is a 30-year veteran who only left the line last year when he was promoted to deputy chief of fire prevention. Like his predecessor, Chief Joseph P. Kane Jr., he is the son of a city firefighter. Capt. Wilfred Burkush retired in 1975 after suffering a heart attack in the line of duty.

From the beginning, Burkush said, "I guess you would say I had a personal goal to do at least as well as he did, if not better."

Burkush's ascension leaves two openings in the department's upper ranks. Nick Campasano, the interim chief since Kane retired, will go back to his previous role as deputy chief.

Space heater triggers three-alarm fire Nashua -

One firefighter was treated for non-life threatening injuries this morning after battling a three-alarm blaze that was started by a portable electric heater.

Seven residents were evacuated from the 22 Mason Road home when the fire broke out around 7:15 a.m. Another resident who lives in a converted garage beside the house was also evacuated. Nashua Deputy Fire Chief Steven Galipeau said when firefighters first arrived there was a "heavy fire" in the back of the house. The fire quickly traveled through walls and ceilings, so more units were called in. Metal ceilings in the home made it difficult to get to the fire, he said. The fire was contained by 8:17 a.m.
