Pelham police trying to track down helpful bystander

Police got some help from a bystander following a car chase yesterday, but they never got a chance to say thanks.

"We're interested in knowing who he is to thank him," Lt. Brian McCarthy said. "He helped a police officer when there was considerable risk to himself."

It all started when Pelham officer Matthew Keenliside tried to pull over a speeding 2002 Dodge Stratus on Dutton Road, but the driver accelerated and fled through the Pelham town center.

After running the plates on the car, police learned the vehicle had been reported stolen in Manchester on Saturday.

The driver, later identified as Lucas O'Sullivan, 25, of Manchester, continued into Windham before he lost control of the car and crashed into a tree on Lowell Road.

Lyndeborough NH - 02/08/2008
Lyndeborough Settles Dispute With Former Police Chief

A week before a trial to determine if Lyndeborough had a right to fire former police Chief James Basinas, he and the town have reached a settlement.

Selectmen Chairman Steve Brown said Basinas and the town filed a settlement deal in Hillsborough County Superior Court on Friday. The town will pay Basinas $23,500, plus $30,000 in legal fees. Brown said the selectmen stand by their decision to fire the chief, but he said settling was a way for the town to focus on the future and not the past.

Selectmen placed Basinas on paid leave a year ago, saying he failed to follow a number of administrative processes and did not provide adequate police coverage.

A judge ordered the chief reinstated last fall, but his officers refused to work with him. In December, townspeople voted to do away with the position of police chief altogether.
